Tasawwuf Tazkiya and Ihsan Definition and Reality Beyond Terms

Translated Pages from the book
Shaykh Abu ‘l-Hasan ‘Ali al-Nadwi
on the topic of Tasawwuf and misunderstanding.
There are two very difficult unavoidable stages encountered in all doctrines, be they ethics, education and training, reformation or the sciences.
1.The one stage where the means become the object, and
2. The other where technical terms obscure truth & realities.
Both the means and the technical terms are imperative and absolutely inborn and natural, without which the propagation and expansion, teaching and explanation of these high objects is practically impossible. However, be they the means or technical terms, for the purpose of achieving the aims and realities, their function is that of attendants and assistants. They are adopted temporarily for the completion of a necessity.

The matter of tasawwuf is very similar. As far as the aims and objects are concerned, they are self evident and unanimously accepted.
Tasawwuf has been adversely affected and victim of the following two factors.
1.The means were exaggerated and
2.The technical terms were over-emphasized and insisted upon.

If a person is questioned:
“Are loyalty to Allah and ethics important or not?”
“Is it necessary to develop firm belief on Allah or not?”
“Is it commendable to be adorned with virtues and be free from vice, such as jealousy, kibr (to degrade another arrogantly), to show off, bear malice and hatred, have love for wealth and honor or not?”
“Is it desirable to liberate the low nafs from these evil tendencies?”
“Humility and humbleness in salat, the state of modesty and entreatment whilst weeping in du‘a, the habit of taking stock of one’s soul, and above all, the love for Allah and His Messenger (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), achievement of a feeling of satisfaction and sweetness or at least to be eager and punctual to attain it, clean dealings, truth and trust, having regard for the rights of humanity, control over one’s self, especially in times of anger, are all these desirable or not?”
Every sane person, especially the Muslim who is not blindfolded by prejudice, will definitely answer that these are not only virtuous but also necessary according to theshari‘ah, and these are the exhortations of the entire Qur’an and volumes of Hadith literature.
If it is said that the method of acquiring these qualities is what the latter generations named tasawwuf, they react with a frown because of their dread for the term.
Others would disapprove because of their bitter experiences with the forerunners and false claimants. They would recall unpleasant incidents and observations that they encountered with them.
This is not the case with tasawwuf alone. It is the problem with all other skills and reformations, where there will be found amongst their propagators, administrators, missionaries and claimants those who are genuine and the false, the authorized and unauthorized, the mature and immature, and even the faithful and the faithless. In spite both of these opposing types, any just person will not deny the necessity of the profession nor object to it.
In worldly professions too, whether it is business, agriculture, industry or craftsmanship, both types are present, the expert and the novice, the guide and the deceiver. Yet, the affairs of the world and religion go on as such. One must attend to one’s own affairs and neither deprive himself of this treasure because of inexperienced claimants, nor cast aside the actual reality because of disagreement with any technical term.
A poet has appropriately said,
Wise men do not get involved in words,
Is the diver’s interest in shells or pearls ?
 “
There are two groups who are opposed to tasawwuf
1.One comprises those who accept its constituents separately, but deny it if it is referred to as a whole. The majority of the people applaud the aforementioned aim and qualities separately, but if it be said to them that, ‘Some people have for some reasons given all these qualities a common name,’ then their colors change instantly and they say, ‘We don’t believe in tasawwuf; it has caused great harm’.
2.The other group consists of those to whom it is acceptable if it is proposed under a different name. For example if it is said,
“The Noble Qur’an has termed it tazkiyah.
 The Hadith names it ihsan.
The latter jurists termed it fiqh al-batin (spiritual jurisprudence)”,
they would then reply that there is no contradiction and that all of these are declarations of Allah and His Messenger (may Allah bless him and grant him peace).
Verily, neither can alterations be made to all the books written, nor can the tongues of men be withheld.
Otherwise, if we were given the option, we should have referred to it by the words tazkiyah and ihsan, and not use the word tasawwuf
Now this is the popular name. This designation is not exclusive to this science alone.
There is no such period in the history of Islam in which the experts, tutors and propagators of Tasawwuf subject did not differentiate between
its body and soul,
reality and form,
aims and customs.
All of them, from the leader of all spiritual guides, Shaykh ‘Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani and Shaykh Shihab ad-Deen as-Suharwardi to Mujaddid al-Alf ath-Thani, Hadrat Shah Wali-Allah ad-Dihlawi,
all have emphatically made a clear distinction between the kernel and shell, the correct object and incorrect interpretation.
They have vehemently rejected all those customs and ways which were introduced into and regarded as part of tasawwuf and tariqah by association with non-Muslims and immature sufis who were unaware.
Such discussions are found in many places in the following books: the
Futuh al-Ghayb and Ghunyat at-Talibin of Hadrat Shaykh Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani (may Allah have mercy on him),
the ‘Awarif al-Ma‘arif of Hadrat Shaykh Shihab ad-Deen as-Suharwardi (may Allah have mercy on him),
the Maktubat Imam Rabbani of Hadrat Mujaddid al-Alf ath-Thani (may Allah have mercy on him),
the works of Hadrat Shah Wali-Allah (may Allah have mercy on him),
the Sirat Mustaqim of Hadrat Sayyid Ahmad al-Shahid (may Allah have mercy on him),
the letters written by Hadrat al-Gangohi (may Allah have mercy on him), and the Tarbiyat al-Salik and Qasd al-Sabil of Hadrat Mawlana Thanwi (may Allah have mercy on him).
They have separated the true from the false while showing absolute impartiality.
Hadrat Shah Wali-Allah (may Allah have mercy on him) has written thus:
“The spiritual connection of the sufis is a great blessing and an alchemy, but their customs (those for which there is no proof in the shari’ah) are worthless. Likewise all these men, without exception, have earnestly stressed the importance of proper ethics, transactions and civil rights and stipulated this as a condition of reformation and approach (to Allah). Their writings elaborate extensively on this topic and their congregations always consisted of advice and propagation in this respect.”
We have been blessed to be able to stay in the company of the saints of our times. Upon seeing them alone were we convinced of tasawwuf
We not only found tasawwuf and tariqah in these personalities but also the essence of the religion and the shari‘ah. Their characters were a reflection of the character of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace).
Their lives, actions and dealings were weighed and molded according to the shari’ah. We noticed that they always separated the aims from the means and laid stress on realities by staying away from and disregarding technical terms.
They did not attach any importance to customs and were staunch opponents and denouncers of innovations.
1.Their obedience to the sunnah was not confined to devotions but also enveloped their habits and dealings as well.
2. They were not followers of this science, but were in fact true reformers.
3.With their divine insight and lengthy experience, they accomplished their task, sometimes with brevity and selection and at other times with omissions and amendments.
Treatment and advice were dispensed to suit each one’s individual nature. In the remedy and diet, full consideration was given to conditions, occupations, and temperaments. Their status in this field is similar to that of a discoverer of medicine or an inventor of a skill. They were masters and not slaves of their profession.
Their concept of the actual purpose of tasawwuf is the sincerity of desiring Allah’s pleasure, be it reformation of character, honest dealings, development of a moderate nature, self control, giving preference to others, submission, recitations, strivings, staying in the company of a Shaykh, and even bay‘ah. If these are not achieved then all this effort is synonymous to a person who works all day long trying to move a mountain with a piece of straw.
Poem:
Khawaja Sahib thinks he has attained spiritual heights,
This conclusion of Khawaja’s is mere wishful thinking.

Ihsan Tazkiya Tasawwuf kya Hai Mujahida Zike Azkar Ashghal Quran Hadith

What Great Scholars Salafus Salehin say Sufism Tasawwuf opinion

ATTAINING QUALITY OF IHSAN IS THE REQUIREMENT OF SHARIAH

What is Ihsan???

Famous Hadith of Jibraeel that is in Bukhari Shareef and Muslim shareef both.............Then he further asked,

"What is Ihsan (perfection)?" Allah's Apostle replied, "To worship Allah as if you see Him, and if you cannot achieve this state of devotion then you must consider that He is looking at you."................

Sahih Bukhari Volume 1, Book 2, Number 48:

Quality of Ihsan is the requirement of Shariah that has to be attained by all Muslims..........HOW TO  to attain it ........Tasawwuf is a science/ MEANS  to attain it

Every principle and Practice in Tasawwuf is according to Quran and Sunnah. Anything away/other than Islamic shariah and sunnat of beloved prophet is not Tasawwuf.

Tareeqat IS Under the ambit/ boundary of shariat. If someone saying /practicing something other than shariat on the name of tasawwuf /Tareeqat he /they are cheating themselves and others on the name of Soofism.

........For detail refer to writing of Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jeelani Rahimullah of Baghdad and Malfoozat of Maulana Ilyas Rahimullah,Makatib of Sheikh Ahmad Sarhindi (Mujaddid Alfasani of India) Rahimullah which has recently published in Urdu.

...........If you like Tasawwuf it is YOUR CHOICE.........IF YOU DONT LIKE IT IS YOUR CHOICE .........NO ONE IS COMPELLING YOU .......YOU CAN CHOSE YOUR OWN WAY FOR ATTAINING QUALITY OF IHSAN........

...... BUT UNFORTUNATELY THERE ARE CERTAIN................GROUPS and ..........Websites ......... giving blanket statement against Tasawwuf  SOOFISM ......They blame Tasawwuf as Bidah......,Innovation...... spit Venom and Poison of their choice

These website/group will always take the name of Kitab o sunnat but will violate qurani and hadith rule of not telling lie/allegation on other muslims................Their have been /are some people in history doinbg wrong on the name of tasawwuf but ..........95 % of Soofis are Pious people and completely following shariah and sunnah........

.......NOW LETUS SEE.................................

What Great Scholars Imam Salafus Salehin say/ Have opinion about  Sufism Tasawwuf Tareeqat

Taken with jazakallah o khair http://www.central-mosque.com/index.php/Spirituality/fundamentals-of-tassawuff.html

Islamic Scholars on Tassawuff

The following quotations of the scholars of Shariah regarding the precedence of the knowledge and science of Tasawwuf (Purification of the Self).

Imam Abu Hanifa (85 H. - 150 H)

"If it were not for two years, I would have perished." He said, "for two years I accompanied Sayyidina Ja'far as-Sadiq and I acquired the spiritual knowledge that made me a gnostic in the Way." [Ad-Durr al-Mukhtar, vol 1. p. 43]

Imam Malik (95 H. - 179 H.)

"whoever studies Jurisprudence [tafaqaha] and didn't study Sufism [tasawwaf] will be corrupted; and whoever studied Sufism and didn't study Jurisprudence will become a heretic; and whoever combined both will reach the Truth." ['Ali al-Adawi , vol. 2, p 195.]

Imam Shafi'i (150 - 205 AH.)

"I accompanied the Sufi people and I received from them three knowledges: ...how to speak; how to treat people with leniency and a soft heart... and they... guided me in the ways of Sufism." [Kashf al-Khafa, 'Ajluni, vol. 1, p 341.]

Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal (164 - 241 AH.)

"O my son, you have to sit with the People of Sufism, because they are like a fountain of knowledge and they keep the Remembrance of Allah in their hearts. they are the ascetics and they have the most spiritual power." [Tanwir al-Qulub p. 405]

Imam Ghazzali (450 - 505 AH.)

"I knew verily that Sufis are the seekers in Allah's Way, and their conduct is the best conduct, and their way is the best way, and their manners are the most sanctified. They have cleaned their hearts from other than Allah and they have made them as pathways for rivers to run receiving knowledge of the Divine Presence." [al-Munqidh, p. 131].

Fakhr ad-Din ar-Razi (544 - 606 AH)

"The way of Sufis for seeking Knowledge, is to disconnect themselves from this worldly life, and they keep themselves constantly busy with Dhikrullah, in all their actions and behaviors." ['Itiqadaat Furaq al-Muslimeen, p. 72, 73]

Imam Nawawi (620 - 676 AH.)

"The specifications of the Way of the Sufis are ... to keep the Presence of Allah in your heart in public and in private; to follow the Sunnah of the Prophet (s) ... to be happy with what Allah gave you..." [in his Letters, (Maqasid at-tawhid), p. 20]

Ibn Taymiyya (661 - 728 AH)

"Tasawwuf has realities and states of experience which they talk about in their science. Some of it is that the Sufi is that one who purifies himself from anything which distracts him from the remembrance of Allah and who will be so filled up with knowledge of the heart and knowledge of the mind to the point that the value of gold and stones will be the same to him. And Tasawwuf is safeguarding the precious meanings and leaving behind the call to fame and vanity in order to reach the state of Truthfulness, because the best of humans after the prophets are the Siddiqeen, as Allah mentioned them in the verse:
"(And all who obey Allah and the Apostle) are in the company of those on whom is the grace of Allah: of the prophets, the sincere lovers of truth, the martyrs and the righteous; Ah! what a beautiful fellowship." (an-Nisa', 69,70)
"...some people criticised Sufiyya and Tasawwuf and they said they were innovators, out of the Sunnah, but the truth is they are striving in Allah's obedience [mujtahidin fi ta'at-illahi], as others of Allah's People strove in Allah's obedience. So from them you will find the Foremost in Nearness by virtue of his striving [as-saabiq ul-muqarrab bi hasab ijtihadihi]. And some of them are from the People of the Right hand [Ahl al-Yameen mentioned in Qur'an in Sura Waqi'ah], but slower in their progress.... And this is the origin of Tasawwuf. And after that origin, it has been spread and [tasha'abat wa tanawa'at] has its main line and its branches.  [Majmu'a Fatawa Ibn Taymiyya al-Kubra, Vol. 11, Book of Tasawwuf, p. 497].
"The miracles of saints are absolutely true and correct, by the acceptance of all Muslim scholars. And the Qur'an has pointed to it in different places, and the Hadith of the Prophet (s) has mentioned it, and whoever denies the miraculous power of saints are only people who are innovators and their followers." [al-Mukhtasar al-Fatawa, page 603]. Ibn Taymiyya says, "what is considered as a miracle for a saint is that sometimes the saint might hear something that others do not hear and they might see something that others do not see, while not in a sleeping state, but in a wakened state of vision. And he can know something that others cannot know, through revelation or inspiration." [Majmu'a Fatawi Ibn Taymiyya, Vol. 11, p. 314].

Ibn Khaldun (733 - 808 AH.)

"The way of the Sufis is the way of the Salaf, the preceding Scholars between the Sahaba and Tabi'een of those who followed good guidance..." [Muqaddimat ibn al-Khaldun, p. 328]

Tajuddin as-Subki (727 - 771 AH.)

"May Allah praise them [the Sufis] and greet them and may Allah cause us to be with them in Paradise. Too many things havebeen said about them and too many ignorant people have said things which are not related to them. And the truth is that those people left the world and were busy with worship. ...They are the People of Allah, whose supplications and prayer Allah accepts and by means of whom Allah supports human beings" [Mu'eed an-Na'am p. 190, the chapter entitled Tasawwuf]

Jalaluddin as-Suyuti (849 - 911 AH.)

"At-Tasawwuf in itself is the best and most honorable knowledge. It explains how to follow the Sunnah of the Prophet (s) and to put aside innovation." [Ta'yid al-Haqiqat al-'Aliyya,p 57]

Ibn Qayyim (691 - 751 AH.)

"We can witness the greatness of the People of Sufism, in the eyes of the earliest generations of Muslims by what has been mentioned by Sufyan ath-Thawri (d. 161 AH), one of the greatest imams of the second century and one of the foremost legal scholars. He said, "If it had not been for Abu Hisham as-Sufi (d. 115) I would never have perceived the action of the subtlest forms of hypocrisy in the self... Among the best of people is the Sufi learned in jurisprudence." [Manazil as-Sa'ireen.]

Abdullah ibn Muhammad ibn Abdul Wahhab (1115 - 1201 AH.)

"My father Muhammad ibn Abdul Wahhab and I do not deny or criticize the science of Sufism, but on the contrary we support it, because it purifies the external and the internal of the hidden sins, which are related to the heart and to the outward form. Even though the individual might externally be on the right way, internally he might be on the wrong way. Sufism is necessary to correct it." [ad-Dia'at mukathaffa did ash-shaykh ibn Abdul Wahhab, p. 85]

Ibn 'Abidin (1198 - 1252 AH.)

"The Seekers in this Sufi Way don't hear except from the Divine Presence and they don't love any but Him. If they remember Him they cry, and if they thank Him they are happy; ... May Allah bless them." [Risa'il Ibn 'Abidin p. 172 & 173]

Muhammad 'Abduh (1265 - 1323 AH.)

"Tasawwuf appeared in the first century of Islam and it received a tremendous honor. It purified the self and straightened the conduct and gave knowledge to people from the Wisdom and Secrets of the Divine Presence." [Majallat al-Muslim, 6th ed. 1378 H, p. 24].

Maulana Abul Hasan 'Ali an-Nadawi (1331 AH b.)

"These Sufis were initiating people on Oneness and sincerity in following the Sunnah of the Prophet (s) and to repent from their sins and to be away from every disobedience of Allah 'Azza wa Jall. Their guides were encouraging them to move in the way of perfect Love to Allah 'Azza wa Jall. "...In Calcutta India, everyday more than 1000 people were taking initiation into Sufism. "...by the influence of these Sufi people, thousands and thousands and hundreds of thousands in India found their Lord and reached a state of Perfection through the Islamic religion." [Muslims in India, p. 140-146]

Maulana Abul 'Ala Maudoodi (1321 - 1399 AH.)

"Sufism is a reality whose signs are the love of Allah and the love of the Prophet (saw), where one absents oneself for their sake, and one is annihilated from anything other than them, and it is to know how to follow the footsteps of the Prophet (s). ..Tasawwuf searched for the sincerity in the heart and the purity in the intention and the trustworthiness in obedience in an individual's actions."
"The Divine Law and Sufism: "Sufism and Shariah: what is the similitude of the two? They are like the body and the soul. The body is the external knowledge, the Divine Law, and the spirit is the internal knowledge." [Mabadi' al-Islam, p. 17]

Who are Sufi Muslims and List of Indian Sufis greats

The Qur'an says, in Surat Maryam,
"Surely We have revealed the Remembrance, and surely We shall preserve it" (Qur'an 15:9),

Then He says,
"And those who believe are greater in love for Allah" (Qur'an 2:165),

"(And all who obey Allah and the Apostle) are in the company of those on whom is the grace of Allah: of the prophets, the sincere lovers of truth, the martyrs and the righteous; Ah! what a beautiful fellowship." (an-Nisa', 69,70)

Hadith of Jibraeel in Sahih Bukhari and Muslim Shareef say......

.................he said, "Now tell me about the perfection of faith (Ihsan)," and the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) answered: "It is to worship Allah as if you see Him, and if you see Him not, He nevertheless sees you." .............(Sahih Muslim, 1.37: hadith 8).................................

Many more Ayats and Ahadith are there for different aspect of Tasawwuf/Tazkia /Ihsan.

WHAT IS TASAWWUF/IHSAN/TAZKIYA/SUFISM ??????????
OR
SUFISM (ISLAMIC MYSTICS) CAN BE DEFINED AS .........

Tasawwuf is the science dedicated towards improving the state of heart to such an extent that nothing other than love for Allah, love for his commands, love for path shown by prophets exists in the heart.

When a person has managed to expel all other than Allah from the heart, and has implanted the perpetual zikr of Allah in the heart, then the iklhaas and the acceptability of his deeds reaches a different level altogether.

At that stage the barakah that emanates from his actions will be unmatched by others who have not been able to reach the same degree of ikhlaas, love for, and perpetual zikr of Allah.

One only has to look at the training undergone by the recent Mujaddids whose work has touched and transformed millions of people, e.g in India such as Mujaddid Alf Thani,Shah Waliullah, Maulana Ilyas Khandlawi, to understand the reason why Allah placed so much Barakah in every action they took.

Their hearts attained such a stage of purity that everything they touched turned to gold.
This is a science to attain it.If someone has doubt why it was
A word on objective Principles and Practices of Tasawwuf
Hazrat Maulana Ilyas has described and clarified this. He said:

"The particular objective of 'tareeqat' (Ihsan,Sulook,Tasawwuf) is that the love for Allah's commands and the dislike for what Allah has forbiddenbecome part of one's nature. (This means producing such a state of mind that delight and pleasure is felt in obeying Allah's
commands, while pain and shock is felt in going near to the
forbidden actions.)

This is the objective of tareeqat.

As for the methods specifically introduced for zikr and spiritual exercises of particular nature, these are the means of attaining this objective.

However, many people have started considering
these means themselves to be the objective of tareeqat, while
some of these means are actually innovations' [in the religion].
Anyhow, since the status of these methods is that they are only
means, and are not desired [from the acts of worships] in
themselves, therefore with change in conditions and needs they
must be reviewed and modified. As regards the things which
are apparent and clearly defined in the shari'at, their practice
will remain the same and necessary for all time."

(Taken from book word and reflection of maulana Ilyas PAGE NO 30)
WORD OF CAUTION IN TASAWWUF/SUFISM.....
Every principle and Practice in Tasawwuf should be according to Quran and Sunnah. Anything away/other than Islamic shariah and sunnat of beloved prophet is not Tasawwuf.

Their is no Tareeqat out of boundary of shariat. If someone say/practice It will be cheating themselves and others on the name of Soofism.

Actual Soofis were very strict on this formula........For detail refer to writing of Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jeelani Rahimullah of Baghdad and Malfoozat of Maulana Ilyas Rahimullah,Makatib of Sheikh Ahmad Sarhindi (Mujaddid Alfasani of India) Rahimullah which has recently published in Urdu.
1. It is known to all that on the name of Sufism so many bad people has entered and spreade Innovation on Graves and so many rituals. No one is supporting those deviated people on the name of Sufism.

2. And Ulmae Haq and good Sufis themselves has always come up agaist innovations on the name of Tasawwuf.

4. Mujaddid Alfasani R.A ,Syed Ahmad Shaheed, Syed Ismaeel Shaheed R.A also were Sufis but strived against wrong practices on the name of Tasawwuf, and made it pure and according to Quran and Sunnah. )

TASAWWUF/SOOFIS GIVE SPECIAL ATTENTION TO FOLLOWING THINGS.
These things are core of Islam. Quran and Hadith is full of these things.

Some of them are.

1.Having strong faith on Allah,Only he to be considered as Rab,all type of worship only for Allah. No khauf and ummed from anyone/anymaterial (Money position power)

2.You have to follow Full Shariah and sunnah that is path of Hazarat Muhammad Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam Wasallam in words action and sprit. There is no scape from it even after attaing highest degree of closeness to Allah (Read the biography of Abdul Qadir jeelani and Junaid Bughdadi Rahimullah)

3.Seeking Ilm e Nafae. Knowledge that bring closer to Allah.
4.Remembering Allah all the Time with tongue heart and action.
5.To fulfill obligation of Allah Makhlooq/creation.
6.Sincerity of Intention. All act only for Allah
7.Calling Mankind towards Allah

e.g India Pakistan Bangladesh is very good example of Work done by Soofia Karam.

Dont be confused that Islam in India is because of Muslim Rulers.......No ..please correct your history knowledge (Read Savior of Islamic Sprit vol 3&4 for detail history)...

Imam Ibn Taymiyya (661 - 728 AH) views on Tasawwuf/Sufism

2. 3. 11, p. 314].

Ibn Qayyim (Student of Ibne Tamiyya) views on Tasawwuf/Sufism (691 - 751 AH.)

1."We can witness the greatness of the People of Sufism, in the eyes of the earliest generations of Muslims by what has been mentioned by Sufyan ath-Thawri (d.
